Prescribing Compound Medications in DoseSpot

Use this workflow when you need to prescribe a compounded formulation that isn't available as a standard medication in DoseSpot. For standard medications and supplies, see How to Write and Send a Prescription in DoseSpot.

Step 1: Open the prescribing workflow

From the patient's chart, click the eRx button to open DoseSpot. On the Patient Details page, click '+ Add a Prescription' in the left sidebar.

If you don't see the button, please confirm if you have prescribing capabilities.

If you see it, but it's disabled, the patient may not have the minimum information in their chart (e.g. address). Check for alerts below the patient's name.

If you are on a mobile device or using a narrow screen, and don't see the left sidebar, click on the two arrows on the top left of the screen to open the sidebar.

Step 2: Choose a pharmacy

If your patient has a default pharmacy set, DoseSpot skips this step automatically.

If not, search for a pharmacy by name, address, or phone number. Click the pharmacy in the results to select it, then click Next. You will be prompted to add it as the patient's default pharmacy before you can advance. You can still change the pharmacy on any individual prescription later.

Step 3: Select or create a compound

Select a compound from one of your preset lists or click on "+ Custom Compound" to create a new one.

Add a name

Fill in the Compound Name field. This is the name that will appear on the prescription.

Add Ingredients

Search for the first ingredient by typing at least three characters. Select the ingredient and strength from the autocomplete dropdown.

If the ingredient doesn't appear in the results, click + Add as a Custom Ingredient. Enter the desired strength, dispense unit, and dispense unit amount manually. If any ingredient is custom, you must check the This is not a controlled substance box before you can save.

To add more ingredients, click + Add Compound Ingredient and repeat the search. To remove an ingredient, click the    icon next to it.

Fill in the prescription details

Complete the following fields:

  • Diagnosis Codes: optional, up to two ICD codes per prescription.
  • No SubstitutionsUrgent: check as needed.
  • Effective Date: required for EPCS prescriptions.
  • Patient Directions: type the SIG manually. You can also use the Dose Calculator to assist with calculations.
  • Total Dispense and Total Dispense Form: required fields.
  • Refills and Days Supply: required fields.
  • Pharmacy: confirm or change the pharmacy. Compound medications are typically sent to a compounding pharmacy, so double-check this before continuing.
  • Pharmacy Notes: add free text or select a common note from the dropdown.

Step 4: Save and review

To save this compound as a favorite for future use, check Create as Favorite and give it a name before clicking Create Compound.

Click Create Compound to add it to the Items to Prescribe panel. You can then add more prescriptions or click Next to go to the Review screen.

On the Review screen, confirm the compound details, then click Approve & Send to transmit electronically or Print Prescription to print. Make sure pop-ups are enabled in your browser if printing.
