User Roles for Non-Prescribers
Non-prescribing users can be assigned one of two roles. Each role defines what actions the user can take when assisting with medication workflows. These are the only available options for non-prescribers.
1. Proxy
The Proxy role is designed for users who support clinical staff but do not transmit prescriptions themselves.
What a Proxy can do:
- Create and queue medication orders
- Prepare prescriptions for provider review
What a Proxy cannot do:
- Sign or approve prescriptions
- Transmit any prescriptions to a pharmacy
Summary: A Proxy can assist with preparing medications, but a licensed prescriber must review and transmit all orders.
2. Prescribing Agent
The Prescribing Agent role grants expanded permissions for assisting with medication tasks, within specific limits.
What a Prescribing Agent can do:
- Create and queue medications
- Transmit non-controlled prescriptions on behalf of a licensed provider
What a Prescribing Agent cannot do:
- Transmit controlled substances
- Approve or sign prescriptions independently
Summary: A Prescribing Agent can prepare and transmit non-controlled prescriptions, but controlled substances must always be transmitted by the provider.
Role Not Applicable to Non-Prescribers: Prescriber / Clinician
The Prescriber / Clinician role is reserved solely for licensed professionals with prescribing authority and is not available to non-prescribing users.
Choosing the Right Role
When assigning a role to a non-prescriber:
- Choose Proxy if the user will only prepare medications for provider review.
- Choose Prescribing Agent if the user should also transmit non-controlled prescriptions on behalf of the provider.
These two roles are the only supported options for non-prescribing users.
