Managing Prescription Refills When Covering for Another Provider
When covering for a colleague, you may notice that prescription refill requests do not appear in your Rx refill requests queue on the home scree. This is an expected limitation of DoseSpot.
Why This Happens
DoseSpot only shows refill requests for prescriptions that were originally written by you. Refill requests tied to another provider’s credentials are not visible to covering clinicians.
What to Do Instead (Recommended Workflow)
To handle refills while covering for another provider:
- Send a broadcast message to the primary provider's patients before planned absences.
- Instruct patients to send a portal message if they need a refill, rather than contacting the pharmacy.
- When a patient messages the clinic, the covering provider can:
- Review the request
- Issue a new prescription using their own credentials
Important Note
When patients contact the pharmacy directly, the pharmacy generates a refill request tied to the original prescriber, which will not be visible to covering providers.
Summary
- Refill requests are provider-specific (DoseSpot limitation)
- Covering providers cannot see colleagues’ refill queues
- Patient portal messages are the best workaround for coverage scenarios
