What’s New in the DoseSpot Prescribing Interface?

DoseSpot, the ePrescribing tool you access through SigmaMD, has a redesigned interface with a new layout and several new features. This article covers what looks different and what's new, so you're ready before you open your next prescription.

Important: your existing patients, prescriptions, pharmacies, and favorites all carry over automatically, nothing is lost in the upgrade.

Redesigned patient details page

When you open a patient in DoseSpot, the layout is now organized into distinct sections.

On the left sidebar, you'll see the patient's name, date of birth, gender, default pharmacy, and a persistent + Add a Prescription button. If you already have prescriptions pending for this patient, the button will be replaced by a "Continue Prescription" option.

The Patient Overview tab will be selected by default. Click on Medication History, below, to switch tabs.

In the center, a Patient Information card shows the patient's address, phone, height, weight, and insurance plan. While the Drug Allergies card displays active allergies.

Below the header, a Tasks section appears whenever there are pending prescriptions, transmission errors, RxChange requests, or refill requests waiting for your attention. It hides automatically when there's nothing to action.

The patient's Prescriptions list sits below, with two tabs: Prescriptions (clinician-ordered) and Self-Reported Medications (patient-reported). You can toggle to show or hide discontinued and completed medications.

New prescribing workflow

Adding a prescription is now a three-step process: Choose Pharmacy → Add Medications → Review.

Read the full step-by-step here: How to Write and Send a Prescription in DoseSpot.

Step 1: Choose Pharmacy

If your patient already has a default pharmacy set, you'll skip this step automatically. Otherwise, DoseSpot will prompt you to search for and select a pharmacy before moving forward.

Step 2: Add Medications

Click on "Add a Prescription" from the left sidebar. Search for a drug by typing at least three characters. Select the medication and strength from the results, then fill in the prescription details.

A new SIG Builder automatically writes the patient directions and calculates the total dispense quantity based on the dose, frequency, and days supply you enter. If you prefer to type the SIG yourself, select Custom Format from the dropdown — this mirrors the old interface.

Once you've filled in the details, click Create Medication. The prescription moves to the Items to Prescribe panel. You can keep adding medications, supplies, or compounds before moving on.

Step 3: Review

Before sending, you'll see all pending prescriptions in a table. Use the edit icon to make changes or the X to remove an item. When you're ready, click Approve & Send to transmit electronically, or Print Prescription to print.

What hasn't changed

  • How do you open DoseSpot from within SigmaMD (same eRx button in the patient chart)
  • Your saved favorites and patient pharmacies
  • The Identity Proofing (IDP) requirement for new prescribers
  • The EPCS workflow for controlled substances (PIN, TFA, and PDMP) remains the same
  • How refill requests arrive from pharmacies and how you respond to them
