How to Set Your Microphone for Scribe
Setting the right microphone keeps your recordings clear and uninterrupted. You can choose, test, and switch microphones at any point — before or during a recording. Scribe automatically detects your current microphone, and if you've used a different device before, it may already be saved as your default.
Set your microphone before recording
- Start a new Scribe session from the Note templates.
- In the template selection modal, locate the Microphone section at the bottom.
- Select your preferred microphone from the dropdown.
- Click Start recording.
Once selected, this microphone is used and saved as your default for future sessions.
To test your microphone, speak normally and confirm that the audio bar below the microphone select shows activity. If there's no movement, switch to a different device or check your system permissions.
Change your microphone during recording
If you need to switch devices mid-session:
- Click Pause on the recording.
- Open Microphone settings (microphone icon).
- Select a new microphone from the list.
- Click Resume to continue recording.
Your new selection applies immediately.
Resume recording with a new microphone
After selecting a new device:
- Click Resume to continue recording.
- If your previous microphone was disconnected, clicking Resume also closes the mic settings automatically.
Preventing iPhone from interrupting Scribe
Apple devices include a feature called Handoff (under AirPlay & Continuity) that can automatically switch audio input between nearby devices — for example, moving from your MacBook to your iPhone. When enabled, your iPhone may take over as the active microphone during a recording without any visible alert, which can interrupt your Scribe session.
To prevent this, turn off Handoff on your iPhone:
- Go to Settings > General > AirPlay & Handoff.
- Toggle Handoff off.
You can also select your preferred microphone directly within the app to keep control over which device is used during recording.
Tips for better audio quality
- Use an external microphone when possible.
- Avoid switching devices frequently during a session.
- Test your mic before starting longer recordings.
- Make sure your browser has permission to access your microphone.
