Pharmacy Not Found in DoseSpot: Search Tips
When sending an e-prescription, you occasionally can't find a pharmacy at the "Choose a Pharmacy" step — often an independent or newly opened local pharmacy. In almost every case the pharmacy is reachable, and the issue is how the search is being run. This article covers how pharmacy listings work, the best way to search, and what to do if a pharmacy genuinely isn't available.
How pharmacy listings work
DoseSpot does not maintain its own pharmacy list. It draws entirely from the Surescripts network — the national directory of pharmacies enrolled for electronic prescribing. This means:
- Any pharmacy on the Surescripts network is available in DoseSpot. If a pharmacy accepts e-prescriptions (electronic prescribing), it is on Surescripts and can be found in the search.
- Neither SigmaMD nor DoseSpot can add a pharmacy manually. A pharmacy becomes available only after it registers itself with Surescripts.
- DoseSpot prescribes to U.S. pharmacies only. Pharmacies outside the United States (for example, in Canada) cannot be reached electronically.
Best practices for searching
The most common reason a pharmacy "isn't there" is a too-specific search or a name mismatch. Pharmacies are frequently listed under a legal or corporate name that differs from the one on the storefront. Use these techniques:
- Search by state and ZIP code only. This is the most reliable method. Enter just the state and ZIP, leave the name blank, and browse the full list of pharmacies in that area to find the one you want.
- If searching by name, pair it with the ZIP code and use fewer, broader keywords. Try a partial name rather than the full storefront name.
- Watch for a different listed name. A pharmacy may appear under its parent company, corporate, or legal name rather than its everyday name.
