Setting Up Your Own Custom Vitals

Custom vitals let you track measurements that aren't part of the standard vitals list, so you can capture exactly what your practice needs for every patient.

This is especially useful for tracking pediatric growth measurements, body composition, physical therapy metrics, or any other vital specific to your specialty.

What the feature does

Define a vital your practice tracks that isn't on the standard list — for example, grip strength, leg length discrepancy, or body fat percentage
Each definition has a name, a unit, and a number format, plus an optional allowed range
Once saved, custom vitals appear as their own fields when recording a patient's vitals, and as their own column in the flowsheet

How to use Custom vitals

1. Create a custom vital

Go to Practice Settings > Vitals > Custom vitals

You can also get there from a patient's chart: open the Vitals section, use the options menu, and select Custom vitals.

2. Set thresholds for each vital

Click "+ Custom Vital" to add a new one.
Enter a name and unit, choose a number format (whole number, 1 decimal place, or 2 decimal places), and optionally set a minimum and maximum allowed value.
Save your changes.

2. Record and view custom vitals

You can add custom vitals to patients at the same place where standard Vitals do, at the patient chart

Active custom vitals show up wherever standard vitals do, like the Vitals Chart, Trends, Variables...

Custom vitals use the number format and unit from their definition, but they don't generate an out-of-range alert the way standard vitals with a threshold group do — a custom vital's minimum and maximum only limit what can be entered.

3. Archive or unarchive a custom vital

Retire a custom vital you no longer need by archiving it. This removes it from the entry form and the patient chart, but existing patient data stays intact, and you can unarchive it at any time to bring it back.

Important

Once saved, the unit, number format, and range lock, only the name stays editable. This protects any values clinicians have already recorded against that definition.
You can search custom vitals by name, filter by status (active or archived), and sort by name.
