Sending a Fax Without Attaching a Document
A fax does not always need an attached document. When everything the recipient needs to read fits on the cover page, the cover page alone is enough to send. This is useful for short requests, asking a specialist's office for records, confirming a referral, or sending a note that would otherwise be a one-line attachment.
Sending Fax Without Document
From Messaging, select New fax and fill in:
- The recipient's Fax number
- The Patient, when the fax relates to one
- A Title, and the message itself in Description
Leave the attachments area empty and select Send.

When a fax can be sent without an attachment
The Send button becomes available once the fax carries something to deliver:
- With one or more attachments, it is always available
- With no attachments, the cover page must be on, and its Description must have content
- With no attachments and an empty cover page, there is nothing to send
In other words, either an attachment or a written cover page will do.
The cover page description
On a cover-only fax, the Description becomes the body of the page; it is what the recipient reads:
- It holds up to 5,000 characters
- Typing "/" inserts a snippet
- Typing "$" inserts a variable
- Signature is optional
Writing the full message here keeps the fax self-contained, with nothing for the recipient to open.
