Summarizing Documents and Chats with Sigma AI

Faxes, scans, and long patient chats take time to read in full. Sigma AI can summarize them so you can see what a document is, what it flags, and what it asks for before you read every page.

Summaries appear in the Sigma AI panel, where you can copy them or add them to a note or a task.

Where you can summarize

A summarize button sits at the top of these screens:

  • Documents inbox: Summarize file on an open fax or scan

  • Patient Files: Summarize file on an open PDF

  • Patient chats: Summarize chat in the chat header

The button opens Sigma AI and summarizes whatever is on screen. You can also ask Sigma AI to "summarize this document" while one is open.

What a document summary includes

A document summary is a few short paragraphs, in this order:

  • What the document is, its date, and who produced it
  • Critical or abnormal results, with values and reference ranges
  • Next steps the document lists, such as follow-ups
  • Changes between values reported in the same document
  • A one-line status, such as follow-up needed

Anything the document doesn't cover is left out, and Sigma AI never adds a diagnosis or recommendation the document doesn't state.

Using a summary

Each summary has actions below it:

  • Copy: copies the text to your clipboard
  • Add task: opens a new task with the summary as its description
  • Add to note: inserts it into the note open in the chart
  • Create note: outside the chart, starts a new note for that patient

In a patient chat, Add summary to note in the chat menu puts a chat summary straight into the note you have open.

Important considerations

  • The buttons appear only when Sigma AI is turned on for you
  • Long documents are summarized from their first 50 pages
  • In patient Files, only PDFs can be summarized
  • Summaries can contain mistakes, so check the original before acting
