Giving a Patient Their Own App Access When They Share an Email (or Have None)
Each patient needs their own unique email address to register for and log in to SigmaMD — the email is the patient's login credential. If two patients share one email (for example, a married couple) or a patient has no email of their own, give that patient their own unique email so they can have their own account and receive their own notifications.
Key Points
- An email is required to register and log in. The registration code is sent to the patient's email. See Sending the Invitation Code for SigmaMD Patient Portal Registration.
- The same email cannot be used for two separate accounts. Each patient needs a distinct email. See Removing a Patient Email from the Chart.
- If two patients share one mailbox, create a new free email (e.g., Gmail or Outlook) for the second patient. For Gmail addresses only, a "+alias" such as name+spouse@gmail.com counts as a distinct address while still delivering to the same inbox — this does not work for Verizon, Yahoo, or other providers.
If the Patient Was Set Up as a Care Recipient
If you worked around a missing email by adding the patient as a care recipient under the person who holds the email, that patient's chat and notification alerts go to the caregiver — not to the patient. Once the patient has their own account (steps below), notifications will go to them directly; for two independent adults you can also remove the caregiver link.
Steps
- Add the patient's own email. Open the patient's chart, click View patient details, go to the Contact tab, edit Contact Details, enter the patient's own unique email, and click Save. See Updating a Patient's Email Address.
- Send the registration invitation code. From the patient's chart, open Chat Messages, update the contact information if needed, then click Resend Invite and Confirm. The code is sent to the patient's email, and they enter it to create their own account. See Sending the Invitation Code for SigmaMD Patient Portal Registration.
- (Optional) Remove the caregiver link. If the patient was previously set up as a care recipient and is now independent, open their details, find the Caregiver section, click Remove Caregivers, and confirm. This converts them to a regular patient and does not affect their health records. See How to Remove a Caregiver and Make the Patient a Regular Patient.
Once registered, the patient has their own login and receives their own chat messages and notifications directly.
